Trauma,
and the link to the Vagus Nerve

Research in this field is proving the Vagus Nerve's ability to hold onto trauma in the body.

Trauma

Trauma is not what happened to you, but the dysregulation you feel in your body as a result of what happened to you.

Trauma gets stored in the body when it is not properly processed, but it can be released though somatic therapies and polyvagal exercises.

Vagus Nerve

The Vagus Nerve in the body has a direct link to trauma. Problems arise when this trauma is not mentally processed, and stays in your body for days, weeks, and even years.

Your body holds emotions that cause physical pain and tension.

Problems associated to the Vagus Nerve :

  • Digestion issues

  • Back pain

  • Hip tightness, pain

  • Jaw "clicking," and tension

Ways To Stimulate The Vagus Nerve and Regulate Your Nervous System

  • Box Breathing

    • (Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and breathe out for 4 seconds, and repeat.)

We don't give deep breathing enough credit, but it helps us regulate our nervous system and move from "Fight or Flight" (Sympathetic Nervous System) and go into "Rest and Digest" (Parasymathetic Nervous System).
